7 Winter Tips to Protect Your Dog’s Paws in Snowy Weather
Nov 18, 2025

Snowy winters are beautiful, but they can be hard on a dog’s paws. These simple tips will help your dog enjoy winter walks safely and comfortably, no matter where you live.
Trim Paw Hair
Long fur between the paw pads can trap snow and form ice balls that cause discomfort. Keep the fur short, but never shaved.
Use Paw Balm
Apply a dog-safe paw balm before each walk. It protects against salt, ice and cracking, and helps keep the paw pads moisturized.
Try Dog Booties
Not every dog is comfortable wearing boots, but they are worth trying. Choose well-fitting booties with soft lining and non-slip soles for better protection.
Warm Up Before Longer Walks
Let your dog move around a little before heading into deeper snow. A short warm-up helps their muscles adjust to the cold.
Shorten Walks in Extreme Cold
When temperatures drop very low, keep walks shorter and stay closer to home. This reduces the risk of frostbite and irritation.
Check for Ice Build-Up
Pause during walks and check for snow or ice accumulating between the toes. Remove it gently if you notice any.
Wash and Dry After Walks
Rinse paws with lukewarm water as soon as you get home to remove salt and chemicals. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
