How to Introduce a New Cat to Your Dog Without Drama
Mar 3, 2024
Bringing home a new cat when you already have a dog can feel stressful, but a calm introduction sets the foundation for a peaceful relationship. Start by giving the cat a quiet room of her own, with familiar scents, a litter box and food. This helps her feel safe before meeting the dog.
Next, begin scent swapping. Exchange blankets, toys or beds so both pets can get used to each other’s smell without pressure. When they seem relaxed with the new scents, arrange short and calm introductions. Use a baby gate or a crate so they can see each other without physical contact.
Reward your dog for calm behaviour, especially for ignoring the cat instead of chasing. Treats and praise help reinforce good manners. Throughout the process, watch their body language. Signs of tension, such as stiff posture, hissing or intense staring, mean you should slow things down.
With patience and controlled steps, most dogs and cats learn to coexist comfortably – and many even become friends.
